Finding Math Applications: The National Air and Space Museum

Planes, war jets, satellites, blimps, and missiles… oh my!  From the rocket equation, to the space shuttle, to President Eisenhower’s Air Force One helicopter, there was so much to learn and explore.

Our high school math students visited The National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly with the goal of obtaining extended knowledge on the mathematics involved in flight and space exploration. They were divided into 3 groups and led by 3 on-site tour guides through the facility.  The tour guides shared extensive knowledge and explanations that helped the students recognize just how much math is involved in both flight and space exploration. In fact, the students learned that correct mathematical computations are crucial to flight and mission success.

Who knows? Maybe we’ll see a mustang in the future flying high!

Happy math to all!
