National Honor Society

Southern Maryland Christian Academy currently has three chapters of the National Honor Society.  The National Elementary Honor Society(NEHS) is for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students; the National Junior Honor Society(NJHS) is for 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students; and the National Honor Society(NHS) is for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students.  In order to qualify for the NEHS, the student must maintain a cumulative academic average of at least 90%. To qualify for the NJHS and the NHS, the student must maintain a cumulative academic average of 87%.  Members must exhibit excellent Christian character both in and out of school.  In addition to the academic requirement, members of the NJHS and NHS must complete 4 hours of individual community service (most of our members complete more than 4 hours), participate in a group service project sponsored by our school (this requirement usually requires no more than 2 hours).  NEHS members participate in 4 service projects during the school year.

To be considered for membership in the Honor Society, a student must have been enrolled in our school for at least one school calendar year.  If the academic average meets the requirement, he/she is invited to complete an application which will be reviewed by a Faculty Council.  The Council reviews the applicants based on Academics, Service, Character, Leadership, and Citizenship. Upon acceptance from the Faculty Council, an acceptance letter is mailed to the applicant. The Induction Ceremony is held in October.
