“Amping Up” Drama with a New Microphone System

"Amping Up" Drama with a New Microphone System

Our Spring 2022 Drama Production debuted our brand new microphone system! This is a huge blessing to the Drama Club since they have never had microphones of their very own. The actors could be heard clearly no matter the seat that you chose. Some of the funds for the microphone system were raised through our SMCA families during Giving Tuesday and the rest we stepped out in faith hoping to raise the rest through funds raised with Boosterthon. Thank you for your continued support of our program these past 10 years! Our new microphone system will be a valued part of our club for year to come.

Mrs. Candace Crawford (Drama Director)

Our Drama Production was an Easter Play called On a Street in Jerusalem about a widow named Judith (Jamie Davis,12th) who mysteriously rejects Jesus and His teachings. Through the story, Judith’s neighbor Leah ( Taylor Baker,12th) and cousin Simon of Cyrene (Jaiyana West, 9th) along with children Alexander ( Jamie Bowie, 10th) and Rufus ( Luke Crawford, 6th) try to convince Judith that Jesus is the one true Messiah worthy of all praise. Even more mysterious is Judith believes that Jesus is the Messiah, but she still wishes him dead. It is not until Judith comes face-to face with Jesus that she finally understands and releases the pain of losing her husband and son. She finally accepts Jesus as her Messiah, and He in turn heals her both spiritually and physically. The play tells the story of the crucifixion of Jesus with some fictional characters to remind us that God loves us so much that He sent His Son to die for us. His plan was to die for the sins of the world to save them. It was a powerful message! On Saturday night, we honored our 7 seniors who were a part of the production.

Below are the senior testimonials about their time in Drama Club:

“One of the greatest activities I have participated in throughout high school was drama. Drama creates an outlet for all students to express themselves. As cheesy as it sounds, when I joined drama, I joined a family. Drama is a family that encourages everyone involved and uplifts God in everything that is done. I was able to interact with students of all ages and gain insight into their lives. While drama seems to some people like a little play that is done twice a year, to me it is so much more. Drama to me is where I formed friendships, fostered relationships with those around me, and grew in my relationship with Christ. This is an impactful play to finish my high school drama career. The love of Christ is depicted throughout this play just as it is portrayed throughout every production. Every play that is portrayed at SMCA has a purpose and God has used me and my fellow seniors for years. Now, I cannot wait to see how God continues to use each actor and stage crew member in upcoming years.”

Taylor Baker

“I really enjoyed being a part of drama for my last year and enjoyed all the people that were in each production. I have been in two other productions that I can remember which were, Today, You will Be with Me in Paradise (playing the soldier) and The Enchanted Bookshop (playing Heidi). Drama has also been a learning experience. I started drama in 6th grade and have shown so much growth. I am glad I got to be a part of this production, and I will miss everyone in it.”

Breonna Barnes

“I chose drama mainly because I like to help out and be creative. I was given many opportunities to be creative and cultivate, an example of that would be the fact that for this play I was given the opportunity to create the art for the tickets and the design for the back of the drama shirts. For years, Mrs. Crawford has asked me to join drama, and this year, I finally cracked and decided to join. I believe that being in The Enchanted Bookshop and On a Street in Jerusalem has given me the chance to come out of my comfort zone and reach an audience that I have not before. I would like to thank Mrs. Crawford for the opportunities and chances that she has given me over the past years.”

Josh Caraway

“SMCA drama productions provide family-friendly performances with plenty of laughter to go around. Throughout the plays, the stage crew was always having fun with doing work behind the scenes. Different stage crews have different styles, but we always manage to put on a great set for each play. More recently COVID-19 prevented many up-scale materials, but the plays continues to surprise audiences with the variety and creativity the stage crew provides. Being the stage manager has its ups and downs, yet I always want to come back. I love performing behind the curtain along with my friends, my siblings, and my mom.”

Faith Crawford

“Since I have been at SMCA, I have participated in 10 plays from 6th grade until now. I have really enjoyed being in all of the plays. I have learned how to take time and actually be able to portray myself inside of all of my characters. Over the years, the majority of the plays that I have been in I was casted as a male character, at first, I did not like it, but after a while I actually enjoyed it. After years and years of being in a male role, my dream finally came true. I have been given the opportunity to play female roles and main character roles for my senior year. I have loved every piece of it. I thank Mrs. Crawford for the opportunity to be able to be a part of the drama club for the last 5 years.”

Jamie Davis

“The reason I specifically chose this year to be in drama was not only for Mrs. Crawford, but also because I enjoy it. This play was a monumental play. As my last play, I wanted to go out with a bang- one worthy of God sitting in the crowd and enjoying popcorn. This play is not for me, but for God, and to bring those who don’t know Him the Gospel.”

“Over the years, drama has allowed me to become closer to a lot of people that I overall never would have. It allowed me to see a different side of them, and for that, I’m thankful. Sometimes pulling a play together was hard work, but it was always worth it, especially as we were doing it for the Lord. There were many lessons to be learned throughout drama, and over the years, I found myself learning quite a bit. I thank Mrs. Crawford for giving me such an opportunity as this, and will carry the lessons that I have learned with me onto the next chapter of my life.”
