A visit from our friend, Dr. Kevin Washburn

A visit from our friend, Dr. Kevin Washburn

“Are you the one that created SPEC logs?”

“Did you invent character?”

“I really like your books!”

“I love reading!”

“I like your outfit!”

These questions and comments were from SMCA students to our visitor, Dr. Kevin Washburn. Dr. Washburn is the lead founder of Foundations and Frameworks, a researched- based and research-supported instructional reading program. The uniquely designed program uses neurological research and has proven achievement in vocabulary, reading comprehension, critical thinking, and written expression.

On March 13th Dr. Washburn walked into each 2nd through 6th grade classroom. He observed from a distance and then approached students with questions about what they were doing and why. He asked a 5th grade student, “Do you like SPEC logs?” The student replied, “At first I don’t. Then I start reading and writing the visual tool and before I know it, I’m really liking it and it helps me to understand.” In a 2nd grade classroom he asked, “What books have you read?” A second grade student not only told him a book he read in October, but he was able to recall many facts and the skill associated with the book.

While in the 6th grade classroom, Dr. Washburn couldn’t believe the quality of writing or how involved the students were during small groups. He pointed out, “Not just a good discussion, but abstract thought being discussed and analyzed.” Mrs. Washington, the 6th grade reading teacher, commended Mrs. Horton and her work with the students from the previous year. The 6th grade students are in their 2nd year of Foundations and Frameworks and because they had a good foundation, Mrs. Washington was able to build on these skills and engage them in higher level learning.

By the 2nd day, Dr. Washburn was greeted by name; like an old friend who was back to visit. This time, he brought teachers from a nearby Christian school who were interested in seeing Foundations and Frameworks in action. It was like our 2nd graders knew that bigger audience was coming. As the visitors approached the rooms, they were gearing up for a grand performance! They were all smiles and manners at first but within minutes students were bouncing out of their seats in anticipation to answer questions. Our students were prepared for visitors, but they weren’t quite expecting our visitor to know so much about reading or care about what they said.

The visiting teachers went into each room and commented afterwards about the student’s natural engagement during small groups. They too were amazed by the quality of work in the SPEC logs and discussions.

During the wrap-up meeting, our teachers were able to offer insight into the program and advice about the program, improvement in test scores, and the difference in student’s overall comprehension. Dr. Washburn presented positive feedback to our students and teachers. He commended SMCA on its commitment to improving and enhancing student learning.
