The Two Ladies Behind the Drama Productions
Praise the Lord for another successful fall production! Bringing Down the House was a musical comedy without the music, and it was absolutely hilarious. What a joy it was to watch 42 SMCA students, grades 6–12, work together to bring the story to life. God has once again shown His goodness and faithfulness. Since the fall of 2011, He has allowed the SMCA Drama Club to produce show after show, and we recognize that every bit of success comes from Him. To God be all the glory and honor.
A production does not just happen. There are so many people that use a lot of time and energy to make this production happen. Have you ever noticed the two ladies in the front row of every production? They are SMCA Drama Club’s Biggest Fans and Cheerleaders. I would like to introduce to you, Mrs. Joan Hall and Mrs. Colleen Gaines. They both have been with me since the beginning of the drama productions. Mrs. Colleen Gaines is the founder of SMCA and our current Chancellor. Her own children and grandchildren have attended and taught at SMCA. Mrs. Joan Hall has also been a teacher and her children and grandchildren have attended and taught at SMCA. They are both faithful members
to Southern Maryland Fellowship Church (SMCA’s home church). They have even had grandkids in the early years of the drama productions. Some of my earliest memories of these two ladies is seeing them sitting in the back of the chapel with sewing machines and all the costumes. They worked for hours into the night, and early mornings to ensure that the actors and stage crew have everything that they needed. Mrs. Gaines always makes sure our costumes are pressed, properly fitted, and just perfect for each production. She has even taken scrapes of cloth and made the most beautiful costumes. She has even been sewing things right up to the start of the production. You can even find her behind stage fitting or fixing a costume. Mrs. Joan Hall gets the script as soon as I can get it to her. She reads it through 4-5 times to make sure she understands everything that is needed for the production. She is the one that made sure that every prop and stage piece is perfect. You may have seen her make trips to Walmart to get that perfect piece or place an Amazon order to get the right thing for the production. Each production, actors go see these two ladies for fittings, props and further instructions. They attend every Dress Rehearsal and provide helpful feedback. They also invite so many people to come see our production. At the end of each night, you can see them clapping the loudest with the biggest smiles. Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Gaines have been an example of what it means to serve the Lord with gladness (Psalm 100:2).
Thank you, Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Gaines for helping the SMCA Drama Club each production. You are the hands that God uses to bring it all together. You deserve the loud applause and all the flowers at each production. You are appreciated, valued, and so loved by the Drama Club!
