Honoring Two Trailblazers: SMCA Celebrates Collegiate Signings of Janiyah Thornton and Wesley Laird

Southern Maryland Christian Academy recently celebrated two historic moments that marked a milestone not just in the lives of two student-athletes, but in the legacy of our school’s 40-year history. On May 22 and June 10, 2025, the SMCA Gymnasium was filled with joy, gratitude, and pride as we honored Janiyah Thornton and Wesley Laird, two outstanding Mustangs who signed to continue their athletic and academic journeys at the collegiate level.

Janiyah Thornton – Making SMCA History in Volleyball

On May 22, surrounded by her family, coaches, teachers, and fellow students, Janiyah Thornton made history as the first student-athlete in SMCA’s 40-year history to sign a collegiate volleyball commitment.

Volleyball is a competitive sport with steep odds. Out of the nearly 470,000 high school volleyball players in the U.S., only about 27,000 continue at the collegiate level—just 5.7%. That makes Janiyah’s achievement not only rare but extraordinary.

More than just an athlete, Janiyah is a remarkable student and leader. With a 3.9 GPA, she has excelled in AP, Honors, and Dual Enrollment courses. She is a member of both the National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars, and she has served as the 2024-25 SGA Student Chaplain. Janiyah was also named to the Dean’s List (Magna Cum Laude) and is a self-published co-author of the book “A Friendship for a Lifetime.”

Standing tall at 6’0”, her athletic ability is undeniable. She boasts a 114” approach jump, 108” block jump, and 108” vertical jump. During the 2024-25 season, she led her team with 108 kills, 60 solo points, and 40 solo blocks, earning the Offensive Specialist Award and MISAL Honorable Mention All-League recognition. As a team co-captain, she inspired not only with her performance but with her poise, character, and leadership.

During her ceremony, coaches Leticia Forrest and Katelyn Young offered heartfelt remarks that reflected Janiyah’s impact both on and off the court. With her signature grace and gratitude, Janiyah expressed her thanks to her parents, coaches, teachers, and the SMCA family before officially signing her celebratory letter. The room was filled with emotion as the crowd cheered for this incredible young woman who has paved the way for others to follow.

Wesley Laird – A Dominant Force on the Soccer Field

Just a few weeks later, on June 10, Wesley Laird took his own well-deserved place in SMCA history. Wesley’s signing marks a significant step not only for him personally but for SMCA’s growing presence in high school soccer.

In a sport where only 8% of high school players continue to the collegiate level, Wesley has stood out from the very beginning. As a team co-captain, he led by example and by performance, scoring 10 goals and delivering 10 assists in just 12 games during the 2024-25 season. His incredible play earned him First Team All-MISAL honors and the prestigious title of MISAL Co-Player of the Year.

Beyond the field, Wesley also demonstrated excellence in academics. A graduate of Liberty University Online Academy, he maintained a 3.85 GPA and earned his Associate’s Degree while in high school—a testament to his discipline and determination.

Coach Matthew Gaines shared thoughtful words that captured Wesley’s spirit and work ethic. During the ceremony, Wesley thanked his family, teammates, and mentors, emphasizing the role of faith and perseverance in his journey. His parents added touching remarks that brought many in attendance to tears, reminding us all of the power of support and prayer behind every achievement.

More Than a Milestone – A Testament to Faith and Legacy

As was beautifully shared during both ceremonies, accomplishments like these do not happen by accident. They are the result of dedication, teamwork, prayer, and a commitment to God’s calling. Both Janiyah and Wesley’s journeys are not just athletic milestones—they are testimonies of God’s faithfulness and the fruit of years of support from coaches, teachers, families, and friends.

As they prepare to take on new challenges at the collegiate level, we send them forth with our full support and heartfelt prayers. They leave behind a legacy and a standard for all future Mustangs who dare to dream big.

Let their story be a reminder that today’s “one day” can become tomorrow’s “day one.”

Run your race, cast aside every weight, and do it all like a Mustang.

Congratulations, Janiyah and Wesley! Your SMCA family is proud of you—today and always.
