Battle of the Classes 2025 – Learning to Work Together, One Ping Pong Ball at a Time
The dollar store cashier couldn’t help but ask after ringing up seven packs of ping pong balls, 28 toothbrushes, and a curious assortment of other items. “What are you planning?” After a brief explanation, the response was simple and perfect: “Your school sounds fun!”
And fun it was. On April 24 and 25, the SMCA gym turned into a whirlwind of laughter, odd challenges, and fierce but friendly competition during this year’s Battle of the Classes. The event, a much-loved break from the academic routine, brought homerooms together for a series of hilarious, hands-on challenges—with a coveted dress-down day on the line.
The scenes? Unforgettable. Students balancing Q-tips on toothbrushes held in their mouths. Ping pong balls flying toward peanut butter-covered bread. Playing cards wedged into watermelons. Pickles dipped in either root beer, blue raspberry, or pineapple powder. And don’t forget the toothbrushes and toilet paper rolls being manipulated in ways no dentist ever imagined.
Beyond the ridiculousness, there was teamwork. Events like “Rolls Over” had students flipping toilet paper rolls with their feet into laundry baskets. In “Blanket Pull,” teams had to stay on moving blankets without stepping off—many were sent back to the start. From threading Fruit Loops onto pipe cleaners with one hand to transporting cotton balls using only Vaseline-covered noses, students quickly learned that winning required more than just speed or strength—it demanded communication and collaboration.
And of course, the crowd favorite, Tug of War, where class pride was put to the ultimate test.
Battle of the Classes continues to be more than just a competition. It’s a reminder that teamwork can be fun, messy, and memorably silly. SMCA students didn’t just walk away with prizes or bragging rights—they walked away having learned how to work together, laugh together, and support one another.
After all, at SMCA, learning isn’t always about books—it’s about building community too.
